Caledonia Community Schoolyard
LOCATION: Cleveland, OH
CLIENT: East Cleveland City Schools
Behnke Landscape Architecture completed this innovative project with the Trust for Public Land (TPL) to transform an asphalt play area into a Community Schoolyard at the Caledonia PK-2 school.
TPL has successfully implemented this program nationally, but this is the first community schoolyard project in the State of Ohio. This process began with the students and staff developing ideas of how to transform this paved area into a playground for students ages PK-2.
Students requested climbing walls, basketball and raised planters for gardening. Pavement areas were removed to install two areas of play equipment with playground turf. Staff requested quiet areas, tables for schoolwork and socialization, walking paths and outdoor classroom areas throughout the campus. TPL also encourages the local neighborhood to utilize this space after school hours.
