KELVIN SMITH LIBRARY/CAMPUS GREENS

CASE WESTERN UNIVERSITY - CLEVELAND, OHIO

The Kelvin Smith Library, CWRU’s main, library at the center of campus, requires a landscape that reflects its architectural significance and context within the campus.  Drainage issues above an underground parking garage and failing waterproofing, however, led to dying plant material and water within the garage.

Behnke developed an enhancement plan that waterproofed the garage and improved drainage above the structure.  New plantings complemented the library's formal architecture and encompassed the entire building with ornamental trees, shrubs, and annual flower displays, providing year-round interest.  Plans for an outdoor reading garden created a gathering and collaboration space for students and staff.

Construction Cost:  $500,000
