Shaw Stadium
LOCATION: East Cleveland, OH
CLIENT: East Cleveland City School District
With the old Shaw Stadium approaching 100 years old, East Cleveland City Schools commissioned Behnke Landscape Architecture led the multi-phase transformation of this underutilized site into a modern athletic complex.
After a brief master planning phase, Behnke proposed a multi-phase plan to design and build the new 4,200-seat stadium, fencing, sidewalks, and practice field in just nine months. The Cleveland Browns, who played two games at Shaw Stadium in the late 1930s, donated the synthetic turf field to the school as part of their “Browns Give Back” program. The rest of the stadium components, such as the stadium lights, bleachers, press box, and ticket booth, were all purchased directly by the school through Sourcewell. A second phase included renovations to the parking lot and the addition of a restroom/locker room building.
