John Carroll University - Hamlin Quad & Bioretention
LOCATION: University Heights, OH
Hamlin Quad serves as a central gathering space at John Carroll University, supporting commencement ceremonies, and a wide range of alumni and campus events. Behnke Landscape Architecture led the restoration of the quad following its temporary use as a parking lot associated with the Bohannon Building demolition and subsequent parking expansion.
John Carroll University engaged Behnke to design a natural turf athletic surface that meets NCAA standards for drainage and planarity, framed by a large bioretention landscape along the edge of the new Bohannon parking lot.
The bioretention areas featured exclusively native plantings selected for long-term performance in the local climate. Together, the quad and surrounding landscape provide year-round visual interest while accommodating athletic use and informal gathering for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors students.
