SKEELES’ FIELD

UNIVERSITY OF AKRON - AKRON, OH

Behnke Landscape Architecture and their team of consultants is currently providing professional design services for the renovation and conversion of Skeeles’ Field from a grass to a synthetic turf field. This conversion includes all required drainage and site preparation. The existing field posed many challenges with over 6’ of grade change and limited drainage on and under the field. Behnke prepared several design options and was responsible for preparing construction documents and estimates for each option, all while working within a very tight budget. Several amenities were bid as alternates to allow for future planning by the University. Behnke crafted the bid with alternates for dugout renovations, a batting tunnel, and a scoreboard. Behnke also explored the layout of a future 500 seat wrap around the bleachers with a pressbox. Behnke conducted construction administration with weekly site visits during construction.

Additionally, Behnke is replacing the synthetic turf field inside Stiles Field House. This turf is on an existing E-Layer with a restraint surrounding the turf. Like the baseball field, we encouraged the University to use a heavy weight synthetic turf carpet to maximize the overall life span of the synthetic field and allow for multiple sports to utilize this space.

Construction Cost:  $1.5 Million
